Silverlight

Silverlight is the latest in Rich Internet Application software from Microsoft. Building on their proven strengths in Web Development technologies and Database software, Silverlight is an amazing alternative to Flash, incorporating a strong data access layer using the Windows Communication Framework. Traditionally a Macromedia (Adobe) Flash domain, Silverlight is very much the newcomer to the arena, offering many of the interface features of Flash with a robust data access tier which is familiar to current ASP.NET Developers.

What is Rich Internet Applications (RIA)?

RIAs offer much of the fluid User Interface features of desktop applications, but offer them in a browser which can be used in a multi-platform environment. Desktop applications are usually tied into a specific operating system and are non-transferable to other systems as-is, requiring a separate installation. RIAs normally operate inside the browser by means of a browser-plugin which can be installed as required by the software requiring. Once the plugin has been installed, the application runs exactly like a desktop application.

Silverlight Features

A Silverlight application can use any number of desktop-based functionality, such as Drag & Drop, custom file imports and graphing. The data access tier runs in isolation providing an asynchronous model for reading and writing data to the server. This allows the user to carry on working while the data is being manipulated elsewhere and removes the traditional postback model employed on current web applications. This type of data access allows for complicated structures to be created and administered with ease, even where a standard web application might prove clunky and cumbersome.

Front-end uses

While Silverlight provides an excellent framework for administration tools, it has also made great in-roads for front-end uses such as banners and information panels. Some or our pioneering work allows users to spin a globe to work out distances, or have language-specific text and offers displayed to them from a SharePoint list.
